ZIPP 84 Front Hub
After a year of further refinement and an exceptional performance record, the Zipp 84 incorporates all our latest developments. Every component is precision machined from a proprietary temper of Alcoa ™ 7075 aluminum, then clear anodized to ensure both beauty and long lasting durability. The new asymmetric axle design requires fewer parts and specifically locates the bearings for maximum performance and longevity. The oversize 15mm axle and the flange diameter increase of 6mm combines for a stiff hub and wheel assembly. The precision axle is complemented by the Zipp proprietary carbon dust cap that is further testimony to our complete commitment to technology development. To manufacture the dust cap we developed specific semi-automatic/precise hand actuated machinery thus ensuring excellent quality and fit on each hub. Steel bearing technology has come a long way in the last decade but we have pushed it further than ever by decreasing the weight by 20%, at the same time increasing the contact area of the balls, lowered the rolling friction and specified a 65% fill rate with Zipp specific hydro-carbon grease. This is another industry leading feature. Not only is the grease itself unique to the industry, the fill rate is over 4 times greater than the industry average. This means a massive improvement in life expectancy, smoothness and long term performance.
ZIPP 202 Rear Cassette Hub
The 2003 rear cassette hub simply rewrites the rules in ultimate hub performance and bristles with technology and manufacturing expertise; this is the new high standard in the industry.
The hub body starts life as a cold drawn bar of Alcoa™ proprietary spec, heat treated 7075 aluminum. This is manufactured on precision CNC machinery so accurate it is capable of making dimensional watch parts to within microns, automatically compensating for temperature, humidity and tool pressure. Another Zipp exclusive is the material used in the free hub construction. The 7XXX alloy is an ordinance spec material developed for high tech military applications and only recently declassified. As a result it is available in relatively small quantities. This material is 33% stronger than 7075 with over 40% greater hardness. It was developed to meet or exceed 7075 in every aspect and as a result delivers a freehub of unsurpassed toughness, durability and long term performance.
As in the front hub, the rear axle is asymmetric and oversized to increase overall hub stiffness and reduce unnecessary parts. This design places the bearings in perfect position for smooth performance and power transfer yet remains an elegant execution of a part designed to handle all the abuse the worlds best cyclists can dish out. The 7075 15mm axle is 25% larger and over 244% stiffer than other designs and slip-fits perfectly into Zipp’s proprietary bearings, providing a precisely machined center for the entire hub to revolve on. The relationship of parts and the precision with which they are made is the very core of great hub performance. Efficient and confidence inspiring power transmission is achieved with three low friction coated steel pawls forged from the finest E52100 Bearing steel, ratcheting against a hardened steel ring, actuated by a single precision wound stainless steel return spring. Making life super easy for you, should you decide to change from Shimano to Campagnolo, simply change the cassette body. The axle and end caps remain the same.
This hub range is designed to be ridden by the discriminating performance enthusiast; our experts have burned lots of the proverbial midnight oil in this pursuit, what we consider the finest hubs Zipp has ever manufactured.
